STORYLINE:

China on Friday announced it will provide emergency humanitarian food aid to Zambia to help the country respond to the negative effects of its drought crisis.

The assistance includes 1,870 metric tons of white rice and the construction of three milling plants.

Wang Sheng, the charge d'affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, said the assistance was meant to help relieve the negative effects of Zambia's drought and was concrete action to implement the theme of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit and the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

China, he said, will help Zambia construct new buildings for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in order to enhance its capacity to provide better diplomatic services.

China will join hands with Zambia in celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations, he added.

The donation testifies to China's support to Zambia in crucial times and will go a long way in responding to the negative effects of the drought, said Hope Situmbeko, the permanent secretary in charge of administration in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

She further said China's decision to construct three more milling plants was timely as it will result in a sufficient supply of mealie meal.

The upcoming FOCAC presents Zambia's cooperation with China at a higher level, she added.
