The river’s near-total depletion in the Jisr al-Shughur district in western Idlib has placed thousands of families at greater risk in a region already struggling with a prolonged humanitarian crisis.
Local farmers say the drying of the river has had a devastating impact on the production of fruits and vegetables, as sharply declining water levels have brought irrigation systems to a halt and severely damaged farmlands.
With their livelihoods under threat, farmers in Idlib have been forced to dig wells and turn to costly alternative irrigation methods in a bid to save their crops amid worsening drought conditions.
