The Gotmar fair, a centuries-old tradition, is held every year on the day following Bhadrapada Amavasya along the banks of the Jaam river. Participants from Sawargaon and Pandhurna villages gather on opposite sides of the river for a competitive stone-pelting battle, aiming to retrieve a flag placed in the river's centre. The first group to capture the flag is declared the winner.

Around 300 people were injured during the annual Gotmar stone-pelting fair in Madhya Pradesh's Pandhurna district on Tuesday. Among the injured, nine sustained severe injuries, with two being referred to Nagpur for advanced treatment, while the remaining seven are receiving medical care in Pandhurna.

The Gotmar fair is steeped in history, tracing its origins back 300 years to a tragic love story. Legend has it that a couple attempting to elope across the Jaam river were fatally struck by stones. The fair has since been held as a form of penance for that incident.
