Brazil: China, Latin American, Caribbean countries hold roundtable discussions on human rights
Brazil - September 10, 2024
The first China-Latin American and Caribbean States Roundtable on Human Rights was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday, where the first report on the two sides' human rights was released.
With the theme of "Diversity of Civilization and the Choice of the Path to Realize Human Rights," the event included three parallel sessions of "Contributions of China-Latin American and Caribbean States to the Civilization of Human Rights," "Realization of the Right to Development and Enjoyment of Fundamental Human Rights," and "Current Challenges and Solutions for Global Human Rights Governance."
It is the first such event between the two, aiming to foster dialog, promote mutual learning among Chinese, Latin American and Caribbean civilizations, and advance the diversified development of human rights in the context of modernization.
The report said that the two sides have laid a solid foundation for cooperation on human rights, with coordination in multiple other sectors. It also pointed out the challenges facing the protection of human rights around the world, including hegemonism.
Some Latin American experts highlighted the importance of poverty alleviation in tackling human rights issues, stressing the necessity of conducting more cooperation in this regard.
Experts also agreed that greater multilateral collaboration is essential to address human rights issues and promote solidarity and common development, although they stressed that the region still has a long way to go to advance this matter.
The event was hosted by the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS) in collaboration with Renmin University of China (RUC) and Brazil's Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and organized by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at the Renmin University of China (RDCY) and the Faculty of Law at the Fluminense Federal University (FD-UFF).
More than 120 senior officials, experts and scholars in the field of human rights from China, Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as representatives from relevant social organizations, think tanks and media participated in the roundtable.
