Truck plunges into sinkhole that opens up on street in India
This is the terrifying moment a cleaning truck collapses into a sinkhole in India.
The tanker was driving down the street when the middle of the road suddenly caved in, causing the vehicle to fall into the pit in Pune, Maharashtra, on September 20.
CCTV footage shows the ground disintegrating under the heavy load of the tanker, which plunged into the water-filled hole.
The quick-thinking driver managed to leap out of the car and avoided any injuries. Two motorcycles were also dragged into the abyss.
Following the incident, twenty firefighters and police officers rushed to the scene to secure the area and retrieve the vehicle, owned by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Fire officer Subhash Jadhav said that the PMC suction septic tank vehicle was in the process of cleaning a toilet near City Post premises at Samadhan Chowk when the ground suddenly gave way.
He said that officials are investigating the cause of the street collapse.
A few months ago, another street cavity was spotted in a nearby city due to poor infrastructure, leading to substandard roads and drainage systems.
Residents are urging the government to take action to fix the roads and prevent similar incidents from happening.
Sinkholes occur when the ground beneath the surface collapses or sinks due to several natural or human-made processes. The holes can range in size from small depressions to large caverns, causing significant damage.
