United States - September 28, 2024

In a dramatic turn of events, Interstate 40, a vital artery connecting Tennessee to North Carolina, has been rendered impassable due to unprecedented flooding. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has confirmed that I-40 at Exit 447, near Hartford Road in Cocke County, remains completely submerged, with water covering the highway at Mile Marker (MM) 432.

This closure, which began after severe weather related to Hurricane Helene, has left local residents and travelers in a state of shock and disarray. The flooding, which saw the Pigeon River swell to record levels, has not only submerged sections of the interstate but has also caused significant structural damage, posing a risk to public safety.
