STORYLINE:

In Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Sovereignty Council, on Thursday met a delegation of the African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), headed by Mohamed Gad, Egypt's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and chair of the AUPSC for October.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): El-ZAIN IBRAHIM HUSSEIN, Sudan's Permanent Representative to the African Union
"The visit of the African Union's Peace and Security Council today is important because it is the first since 2015. It indicates a new positive connection between the African Union and Sudan after the suspension of (Sudan's) membership in 2021 following the corrective measures which dissolved the partnership with the civilian component for known reasons."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): MOHAMED GAD, Egypt's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, chair of the African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for October
"We spoke with His Excellency the president about the need to create the necessary environment for Sudan to regain its membership in the African Union, whereas it is unlikely for Sudan to go through such a crisis while its membership in the African Union is frozen."

A high-level delegation of the AUPSC on Thursday began an official visit to Sudan, where the delegation engaged in a series of intensive meetings with Sudanese officials focusing on ways to end the ongoing conflict in the country.

Sudan has been embroiled in a violent conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces Since April 15, 2023. The conflict has resulted in approximately 20,000 deaths, thousands of injuries, and the displacement of millions, according to most recent estimates by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
