Extinction Rebellion zealots allegedly attacked the New York Film Festival.

Members of the group reportedly disrupted the Saturday afternoon screening of 'Oh Canada' on October 5.

The activists, citing the escalating threat of climate change, claimed 'there is no film on a dead planet'.

The protest was reportedly not aimed at the film or festival but served as a 'reminder of the existential threat posed by unchecked climate change'. Extinction Rebellion claimed that increasing natural disasters are disrupting cultural events worldwide.

This year, the Savannah Film Festival cancelled events due to Hurricane Helene, while last year, flooding in New York's subways affected attendance during NYFF premieres.

The activists that while films like 'Oh Canada' portray characters fleeing from one crisis to another, the reality of climate change offers no such escape, with Canada facing unprecedented weather conditions.

Extinction Rebellion spokesman Shayok Mukhopadhyay said: 'Insurance companies are pulling out, premiums are skyrocketing, and this is just the beginning.

'If we don't act, there will be no film festivals left to disrupt.'

The protest also sought to draw attention to the inadequacy of current climate solutions.

Activist Jeff M said: 'Electric cars and renewable energy are steps, but they're not enough. We need systemic change, not just technological fixes.'

Extinction Rebellion describes itself as an international 'non-violent civil disobedience' movement.
