A taxi driver battled through powerful winds as Typhoon Danas lashed Taiwan.

Video shows the cabbie manoeuvring the yellow vehicle out of a car park as a violent squall lashed a neighbourhood in Tainan on July 6 evening.

Part of the taxi's bumper was seen nearly peeling off amid the gales.

Typhoon Danas made landfall in Taiwan late Sunday evening, killing two and injuring more than 500 as it pounded the island's western coast.

One person was crushed by a falling tree while driving, and another died after a power cut caused his respirator to malfunction.

Authorities said the Danas knocked down power to almost 700,000 homes and disrupted more than 300 domestic and international flights.

Danas was reportedly the first typhoon to touch down in Taiwan's Chiayi County, in a rare and devastating hit.

It has greatly weakened after making landfall, and was expected to hit China's Zhejiang province late on Tuesday, July 8.
