Gaza Strip - Recent

Palestinians in northern Gaza are suffering from severe shortages of food, and have to rely on canned food, which can be expensive and unhealthy for them.

The UN World Food Programme has warned that escalating violence in northern Gaza is having a disastrous impact on food security for thousands of Palestinian families, noting that the main crossings into the north have been closed and no food aid has entered since October 1.

At a market in northern Gaza, China Global Television Network (CGTN) reporters interviewed four residents who are struggling with the lack of supplies and soaring prices.

The ongoing military operation by Israel in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of over 42,000 Palestinians and the displacement of more than 2 million people.

"A can of beans that used to cost 1 or 2 new shekels (0.27 or 0.53 U.S. dollars) now costs 10 new shekels (2.66 U.S. dollars), which is expensive, because 10 new shekels is a big sum for us. The supplies distributed every month are only enough to last for five days. We have had no relief supplies in northern Gaza for 20 days, no tomatoes, potatoes or any other vegetables. The Gaza Strip is in urgent need of aid, especially in northern Gaza. When aid supplies come, our life can be better. We are having a really hard time now.";

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Umm Muhammad Abu Zayed, resident:
"We had something to buy a month ago. Although foods were expensive, they still existed. They are all gone now, no vegetables, no fruits, no milk or dairy products, just canned food, which is expensive. No beef, chicken or fish, no fresh food.";
6. Various of canned food on display at store;
7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdul Abu Al-Hana, resident (partially overlaid with shot 8):
"Now the canned food costs 1 new shekel each and is sold out in market the next day. This is the current situation in northern Gaza. The same canned food sold for 2 new shekels one day and 12 new shekels (3.19 U.S. dollars) the next. We are going through a famine now and have to live on canned food, even though it is also very expensive. We're unable to have vegetables because their prices have skyrocketed.";

10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ali Al-Jiar, resident (partially overlaid with shot 11):
"Markets here have been largely empty for nearly a year. As you can see, Gaza has been without vegetables during this time, and there are no other necessities to get, so people are starving to death.";
