STANDUP (English): TIAN ZHONGQUAN, Xinhua correspondent
"Hello, everyone. We are on the southern bank of the Yellow River in Henan Province.
This is a vital part of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China.
The freshwater from Danjiangkou Reservoir crosses the Yellow River just here.
How to transfer freshwater from the southern bank of the Yellow River to the opposite side was the most challenging task during the construction of the mega water diversion project.
But they have done it. Let's have a look."

The Yellow River Crossing Project is one of the large-scale water transfer structures on the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

It is also a key channel for water to cross the Yellow River from south to north.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LI CHAOFENG, Head of the project's administration office
"The Yellow River Crossing Project is very complex. The poor geological conditions made the construction quite difficult. But we have overcome many difficulties at that time."

The most challenging part of the tunneling project is the tunnel excavation.

Considering the sandy soil and sediments at the bottom of the Yellow River, Chinese designers imported two custom-made shield tunneling machines from Germany.

The Yellow River Crossing Project consists of two tunnels which are both 4,250 meters in length and seven meters in inner diameter.

Both tunnels have a two-layered structure in which a permeable barrier separates the inner and outer layers. This design enables each layer to endure water pressure from both inside and outside of the tunnel.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LI CHAOFENG, Head of the project's administration office
"There are a total of 8 automatic monitoring stations in the Yellow River Crossing Project.
By analyzing these automated monitoring data, we can keep track of the project's operating status, detect dangerous situations, and deal with them on time to ensure the normal operation of the project.
The middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is 1,432 kilometers long and adopts a strict management system.
The water of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has always been of excellent quality."
