Tbilisi, Georgia - November 11, 2024 Deputies from Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, France, Sweden, and Estonia spoke at an opposition rally in Tbilisi, protesting the results of the parliamentary elections held on October 26. Among the speakers was Michael Roth, Chairman of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, who urged Georgians to fight for democracy and mentioned that due to the political crisis in Germany, this could be his last visit to Georgia. Protesters blocked Rustaveli Avenue as Georgian opposition leaders reiterated that the election was rigged and that they would not accept the results. The EU delegation, which arrived in Tbilisi on Monday, also met with President Salome Zourabichvili. Roth stated on behalf of the EU delegation that the October 26 election would only be recognized as legitimate after an independent investigation by European bodies. He warned that failure to permit such an investigation could lead to sanctions against Georgian authorities, describing the elections as unfair and marred by widespread violations. Meanwhile, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili declined a meeting with the EU deputies.
