Police arrest dozens at illegal Chinese gambling den in Bangkok
Police arrested dozens of people at an illegal Chinese casino in Bangkok, Thailand.
Police in the Huai Khwang district raided the gambling hub in Soi Pracha Rat Bamphen on November 8, following a tip-off from an undercover officer.
They converged on the single-storey house and detained 30 suspected illegal gamblers.
Police Major Chitsanupong Khainoonsing of the Huai Khwang Police Station said the suspects included Chinese, Thai, and Burmese nationals, and one 'stateless' individual.
He said: 'We charged them with organising and participating in illegal gambling for profit without permission. We took them to the Huai Khwang Police Station for further legal action.'
Police also seized playing cards, 184,000 baht in cash, Chinese dominoes, Mahjong tiles, two sets of Mahjong equipment, one set of equipment for a game similar to Baccarat, an electronic game machine, and security camera equipment with servers.
One of the Chinese suspects allegedly admitted to organising the games and renting the house.
The raid came just days after the Metropolitan Police Bureau descended on an illegal Chinese gambling den disguised as a restaurant in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang district on November 5.
Authorities arrested at least 15 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals suspected of illegal gambling at the underground casino. They reportedly arranged appointments to meet through chat apps and social media.
Most forms of gambling are illegal in Thailand under the country's Gambling Act of 1935.
Poker, and other games like slot machines and baccarat, fall under the law's 'List A' and are prohibited.
Organisers of List A games may be punished with detention between three months and three years, and a fine ranging from 500 to 5,000 baht.
While players may be either jailed for up to three years, fined up to 5,000 baht, or both.
