Rare giraffe calf born in Austria delights conservationists
A rare giraffe calf born in Austria has delighted conservationists.
The reticulated long-necked mammal was born overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, November 14, at the Vienna Zoo.
Authorities said the healthy female calf is receiving exceptional care from her mother, though the zoo remains cautiously optimistic as they closely monitor the pair's early days.
Dr Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, the zoo's director, said: 'The birth went perfectly, but with giraffes, there's always a significant risk.'
The calf's fall from a height of two metres during birth makes the first few days crucial for survival. Both mother and calf are under constant observation, with zoo experts monitoring their behaviour through cameras in the giraffe house.
While the mother and calf are temporarily separated from the rest of the herd, they are in a specially prepared area with non-slip flooring to ensure the young one's safety.
If all goes well, the calf will soon be introduced to the rest of the group, including her nearly three-year-old sister.
Dr Eveline Dungl, the zoo's curator, added: 'This birth is a wonderful addition to the herd.
'Young animals bring fresh dynamics and excitement to the group, and our dedicated zookeepers are thrilled.'
The reticulated giraffe, known for its distinctive coat pattern of white-lined, polygonal spots, is a critically endangered species. This calf plays a crucial role in the European conservation breeding program to prevent the species' extinction.
