STORYLINE:
Visiting Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed his country's willingness to support Lebanon's official institutions, including the Lebanese army, in Beirut on Monday.
"Greece has been and will remain a full partner in your efforts to rebuild your country," Mitsotakis said at a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart, Najib Mikati.
"It is essential to support the Lebanese army, which is supposed to play a major role in implementing the UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement with Israel while ensuring the return of the displaced to their homes in southern Lebanon," Mitsotakis said, expressing readiness to strengthen ties between the two armies.
Voicing support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Mitsotakis said it is important to support "Lebanon's steadfastness in addressing threats and protecting its borders" and to confirm respect for the ceasefire and UN Resolution 1701.
"We must work together and collectively to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and respect for human rights in all communities and ethnic groups in this country," he added.
For his part, Mikati told the press conference that the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation and the possibilities of concluding bilateral economic and trade agreements, which may contribute to strengthening and enhancing bilateral ties and helping Lebanon emerge from its financial and economic crisis.
He said they also discussed the current situation in Lebanon, stressing the importance of adhering to the ceasefire agreement and the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701, in which the Lebanese army plays an important role.
On Monday, Mitsotakis also met with Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri and Army Commander Joseph Aoun.
