Greece: Greek activists voice long-standing plight of Palestinians, support for Gaza flotilla
SHOTLIST ATHENS, GREECE (SEPTEMBER 30, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL ) 1. VARIOUS OF ACTIVISTS LOOKING AT PHOTOS AND ILLUSTRATIONS ABOUT GAZA AND PALESTINE 2. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “The Global Sumud Flotilla emerged from the union of four initiatives of practical solidarity with the Palestinian people. These include: March to Gaza, now called the Global Movement to Gaza; a part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition; the Convoy Sumud from Greece; initiatives from Maghreb countries; and the Sumud Convoy from Southeast Asia. These collectives have united to form the Global Sumud Flotilla.” 3. WHITE FLASH 4. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “The goal of the Global Sumud Flotilla is to show that people from all over the world are uniting and trying to reach Palestine. It seeks to highlight that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. For decades, Gaza has been under an illegal naval blockade imposed by the state of Israel.” 5. WHITE FLASH 6. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “This blockade must be broken. A humanitarian corridor must be opened. These ships carry symbolic humanitarian aid. Nevertheless, their primary message is opposition to the genocide that has been taking place in Palestine for approximately 20 to 22 months.” 7. WHITE FLASH 8. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “Moreover, it aims to expose the fact that Western countries, and others around the world, are not doing what they could to stop the genocide in Palestine.” 9. WHITE FLASH 10. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “The Palestinian people, through their persistence and resilience, have shown us that resistance is a real possibility for oppressed peoples. They are currently standing up against one of the most authoritarian and fascist regimes on the planet. The state of Israel is a Zionist entity, a racist entity, a colonial entity. It has launched attacks on nine countries over the past two years and occupies land in three of them.” 11. WHITE FLASH 12. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) COORDINATOR OF MARCH TO GAZA GREECE, ANTONIDES HARAS, SAYING: “Despite living under conditions where they often lack even access to water or roads, Palestinians continue to demonstrate that resistance is possible — even against the overwhelming military might of such a state. In reality, the Palestinian people are striving to liberate all of humanity.” 13. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “And here we see a series of photographs taken in 2001, specifically in April — Easter of 2001. I had been in Gaza visiting a very good friend of mine who was with Doctors Without Borders and was working in a hospital with Palestinians.” 14. WHITE FLASH 15. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “I went to see his work, and obviously it was the period when the Second Intifada had already begun, if we remember the kids with stones back then. Since September 2000, there were some days when I had the chance to see people in their everyday life. There are some photos here, for example on the beach, of the children playing, but at the same time those same children were also taking part in demonstrations. At that time there was the killing of a 14-year-old.” 16. WHITE FLASH 17. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “It’s telling from an interview I had taken — not by me, but by an Israeli journalist, which I copied — that at that time there was an order to soldiers that if someone was under 12 years old they should not shoot them. That’s why they were saying that if someone is over 12 years old he is not a child, he’s a fighter and must be killed. A sniper even said that we have 10 seconds from the moment we have him in our sights to decide whether he is or isn’t [a fighter], to make our decision. This shows the whole madness of war and, of course, the barbarity of the Zionist army from back then.” 18. WHITE FLASH 19. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “So here we have an example from 2001 — nothing like today, but it’s a continuity. Well, it’s obvious that today we are talking about absolute barbarity. I mean, what worse could happen?” 20. WHITE FLASH 21. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “The whole city of Gaza is currently disappearing. People are forced once again to run to find shelter. Where are they to find shelter? People do not want to abandon their land.” 22. WHITE FLASH 23. (SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ACTIVIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YORGOS CHARBOPULOS, SAYING: “Palestinians are also very attached to the land. I remember that from back then. Therefore we are talking about sheer barbarity. We’ve said it — what else can we say? It’s genocide, it’s a slaughter, it’s an attack on a civilian population... it doesn’t get any worse. There is solidarity from all over the world, but pressure must be applied to governments to cut ties — commercial ties first of all, and military ties with Israel. Only that can stop Israel. The peoples — at least a large part of the peoples, to tell the truth, because not everyone in the world is on board for many reasons — are with Palestine. But the issue is for governments to cut their ties with Israel.” 24. PALESTINE PHOTOS ON DISPLAY 25. MAN AND WOMAN LOOKING AT PHOTOS 26. ILLUSTRATIONSATHENS, GREECE - SEPTEMBER 30: As the Global Sumud Flotilla sails towards the Gaza Strip, now approximately 150 nautical miles away and approaching a "high-risk zone," Greek activists and initiatives are emerging as a central force behind the international campaign. The flotilla, comprised of about 50 ships with over 500 activists, aims to break Israel's naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave. The Greek-based "March to Gaza Greece" initiative is a key organizer, providing a platform for local solidarity and coordinating with the international coalition. In an exclusive interview with Anadolu on Tuesday,Sept. 30, Antonides Haras, the Coordinator of March to Gaza Greece, detailed the group's pivotal role. "The Global Sumud Flotilla emerged from the union of four initiatives of practical solidarity with the Palestinian people," Haras stated. Haras explained that his group is deeply involved in the efforts, stating, "March to Gaza Greece takes part in every activity aimed at supporting Palestine." He emphasized the flotilla's primary goal is to show global unity and highlight the situation in Gaza, which he described as a "genocide." "For decades, Gaza has been under an illegal naval blockade imposed by the state of Israel. This blockade must be broken. A humanitarian corridor must be opened," Haras said from Athens, underscoring the core demand driving the Greek and international activists. To support Sumud filotilla, the activists also organized a powerful photography exhibition showing the decades-long struggle of the Palestinian people. The exhibition, featuring photographs taken by Greek activist Yorgos Charbopulos in Palestine in 2001, serves as a poignant reminder that the current crisis has deep roots. Organized in the context of the "March to Gaza Greece" initiative, the display connects past injustices to the present "barbarity," as described by the organizer. Charbopulos, a member of March to Gaza Greece, documented his visit during the Second Intifada, capturing scenes of everyday life juxtaposed with moments of intense conflict and mourning. Reflecting on his experiences, Charbopulos drew a direct line from the past to the present. "It’s a continuity... Well, it’s obvious that today we are talking about absolute barbarity," he told Anadolu. "The whole city of Gaza is currently disappearing." Charbopulos echoed the strategic demand of the broader movement, emphasizing the need for governmental action. "Pressure must be applied to governments to cut ties — commercial ties first of all, and military ties with Israel. Only that can stop Israel," he added. According to Palestinian health authorities, the Israeli army has killed over 66,000 Palestinians, a majority of them women and children, since October 2023, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.
