Buenos Aires, Argentina - December 11, 2022 The myth and legend of Carlos Gardel's life begins at the very moment of his birth. It is known that he came into this world on December 11, but it is not entirely clear in what year this happened or where, given that there are doubts as to whether it occurred in France, Argentina or Uruguay. However, after ten years of collecting documentation and interviews in the three countries, a group of researchers found the birth certificate and published it in the book El padre de Gardel (Proa Amerian Ediciones). It shows that Charles Romuald Gardes - his birth name - was registered on December 11, 1890 in the civil registry of Toulouse, France. This demolishes, among others, the theory that he was born in 1887 in the Uruguayan city of Tacuarembó. The truth is that Carlos Gardel moved to Argentina as a child, and in 1923 he became a naturalized citizen. During the first years of his stay in the country, he lived with his mother in a house located on Uruguay Street, between Presidente Perón (then Cangallo) and Sarmiento (Cuyo). In addition, the real surname of this tango singer was Gardes, but he decided to change it. Added to this, among the various nicknames he earned throughout his life, was “el Morocho del Abasto”, which refers to the area where he sang his first songs in front of the public. One of the first tangos he sang was “Mi noche triste”, and he premiered this song at the Teatro Esmeralda when he was not yet the star he would become a short time later. Soon, he developed a very personal style and began to become famous for his way of singing. However, until that moment, Gardel had not taken singing classes, something he did later to perfect himself as a vocalist. April 9, 1917 was a key day in the life of Carlos Gardel. On that day, 105 years ago, “el Zorzal Criollo” participated in what was his first recording, and he did so as part of the Gardel-Razzano duo. The album had one song per side: “Cantar eterna” and “Entre colores”. This marked the starting point for a career as prolific as it was successful: in fact, in total, “the King of Tango” participated in 957 recordings, corresponding to 792 different songs. With each of these, Gardel demonstrated that his thing was not only tango, but that he was capable of standing out in other genres such as folklore, milonga, ranchera, zamba and tonada. Later, he lent his voice so that great pieces composed by other artists would become immortal. This is the case of “Caminito”, “Mi Buenos Aires querido”, “Tomo y obligo”, “Cuesta abajo”, “Sus ojos se cerrado”, “Mano a mano”, “Yira yira” and “El día que me quieres”. Together with the poet Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel would compose as a musician two of the greatest tangos in the entire history of the country: “Volver” and “Por una cabeza”. Both were presented between 1934 and 1935, that is, shortly before the tragic accident that marked the end of his life and the birth of the legend surrounding his art.
