STORYLINE:

The rescue efforts by volunteers from around Spain helping with the recent catastrophic floods in the eastern region of Valencia that left over 200 people dead were a great success, said volunteer forest firefighters from the nearby region of Catalonia.

However, "listening to the experts" is essential to prevent such disasters in the future, they added.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Catalan): ORIOL GARCIA, Operational coordinator of the Forest Defense Associations (ADF)
"Most technical experts have already informed their political or technical superiors of the risks that exist in the long term. They need to listen to these technical experts and invest the funds necessary to carry out prevention."

More than 21,000 volunteers from around Spain went to help in the affected municipalities, according to the Volunteer Coordination Centre, set up by the Valencia regional government.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Catalan): SANTI MONTSECH, Sector coordinator of the Forest Defense Associations (ADF)
"Obviously when there's such a big catastrophe and so many people have to work together for the first time, then logically there will always be things to improve, because when there are so many people, it's very difficult to tie everything together, but in general, from the moment we arrived, things went really well."

The floods affected an area of 562 square kilometers in 75 municipalities in Valencia where 845,371 people live.

Some 82 percent of Spaniards believe that more state resources should go towards dealing with this type of weather phenomenon, according to surveys carried out this month by Spain's Centre for Sociological Research.
