This is the impressive moment an intelligent parakeet showed off its cognitive skills by colour-matching balls.

Fiji, a Rosy-faced Lovebird, demonstrated its colour-coding skills in Henan, China, on December 14.

Footage shows the bird's keeper throwing different colours of crumpled paper balls at the feathered creature.

Fiji then sorts the balls based on their colours into their designated matching small boxes surrounding the bird.

The keeper said: 'Fiji has the intelligence of a grade five student. I was so amazed by its capability to distinguish colours.'

Lovebirds are native to Central Africa and parts of Tanzania, and prefer dry areas with standing water. In captivity, they can live between 15 and 25 years.

They can learn to do many things, including sliding doors open, playing dead, and putting coins in a toy bank.
