STORYLINE:
Ship traffic in the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, one of the world's busiest waterways, was suspended on Friday in both directions as part of a search and rescue mission, local media reported.
Citing a statement from the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Turkish newspaper Haberturk Daily reported that the suspension was due to ongoing efforts to locate two siblings who fell into the sea and went missing.
The incident occurred on Nov. 23 in the Sariyer district on the European side of the strait, where Ayse Can, the sister, fell into the water while taking a photo, and her brother, Velat Can, jumped in to rescue her, according to the daily.
The Coast Guard, marine police, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, and underwater search and rescue teams have been trying to locate the two ever since they were swept away in the strait. However, this is the first time that the strait's maritime traffic has been suspended for the search and rescue mission, said the daily.
Connecting the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea, the 30-km-long Bosphorus Strait is known for its strong currents.
