Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday morning he is stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party.
Giving a speech outside his home at Rideau Cottage, Trudeau said he will stay on until his successor is chosen.

"And the fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history. That's why this morning I advised the Governor General that we need a new session of Parliament."
The prime minister said he has asked Governor General Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament until March 24.
