A lantern was released for good luck, but it turned evil, firing sparks at worshippers below.

Devotees launched a huge, colorful hot air balloon into the sky with firecrackers attached to its end during the Loy Krathong festival in Lampang, Thailand, on November 15.

Footage shows the inflatable floating in the sky. Moments later, flames from the burner ignited, burning the threads that connected the pyrotechnics, causing them to light up and shoot embers and sparks at festival-goers on the ground.

Upon realizing the out-of-control sparks hitting the area and people below, they immediately ran to avoid getting burned.

Loy Krathong is a traditional Thai festival celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month in the Thai lunar calendar, usually in November.

The festival is known for its beautiful and symbolic practice of releasing krathongs - small, decorated floating vessels made from banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense - onto rivers, canals, or other bodies of water.
