Sydney has been battered by a severe thunderstorm, forcing Sydney Airport to halt all flights temporarily.

The storm, fueled by an unstable airmass and upper trough, brought wild winds exceeding 100km/h, large hail, and heavy rain to the city and surrounding regions, including the Hunter, Illawarra, and Central Tablelands.

Arriving flights have been diverted, and departing aircraft returned to their gates, leaving passengers stranded. Power outages have also disrupted light rail services between Town Hall and Circular Quay, leaving commuters scrambling for alternatives.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as the severe weather continues to lash New South Wales.
