House Left Isolated in the Middle of Highway Due to Land Dispute
A peculiar sight has emerged in Jinxi County, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, where a lone house stands in the middle of the newly constructed G206 bypass road, surrounded by circular lanes on both sides. From above, the house and the road resemble an eye, leading netizens to nickname it the "Eye of Jinxi."
This "house in the middle of the road" has drawn significant attention since 2024, with the homeowner, Mr. Huang Ping, dubbed the "strongest holdout."
Mr. Huang’s home was situated along the planned route of the bypass road, requiring demolition. Authorities initially offered him over 1.6 million yuan in compensation and two resettlement permits, to be issued over two years. However, Mr. Huang insisted on receiving both permits at once to secure housing for his two sons and declined the offer. As negotiations stalled, the local government opted to construct the road around the property to maintain progress.
Mr. Huang and his 11-year-old grandson continue to live in the house, which remains fully connected to water and electricity. During the day, they spend time in the nearby village, returning home after construction crews leave for the night.
While Mr. Huang acknowledges that nighttime noise has not been an issue yet due to the lack of traffic, he worries about what will happen when the road officially opens. Reflecting on his decision to reject the government’s original offer, he admits to regret, comparing his situation to a lost gamble.
Now encircled by the road, Mr. Huang describes the house as feeling like a cage. He continues to pursue legal action, seeking additional compensation from the construction authorities.
