LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 18: Luke Michaelides, 13, with his two African Wild Buffalos: "Hop-a-long" (behind) an adult mother aged around 6-8 years old weighing in at 500kgs, and her calf "Skip-a-long" (front) a 15 month-old, 300kg female, on August 18, 2010 at the family farm in Limpopo, South Africa.

They are one of the largest and most feared mammals on Earth but for Luke Michaelides these buffalo are like best friends. Luke touches, washes and even plays with these wild African brown buffalo, mother 'Hop-a-long' (named after breaking her leg) and her offspring 'Skip-a-long', on his family farm in Limpopo, South Africa. The African buffalo, affalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a large African bovine known as one of the "big five" or "Black Death" in Africa. Widely regarded as a very dangerous animal, it is believed that wild buffalos kill over 200 people every year. For Luke, who is writing a book about his relationship with the buffalo, his relationship has been built upon a slow process of trust and communication.
