New York, United States - February 18, 2025 Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that participants at a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting reached a four-point consensus on revitalizing multilateralism. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at a press conference after chairing the UN Security Council's high-level meeting on "Practicing multilateralism, reforming and improving global governance." The world is now facing unprecedented challenges and risks, and global governance is at a crossroads, Wang told reporters, adding that China, as the rotating president of the UN Security Council this month, proposed to hold the meeting to encourage all parties to revisit the founding aspiration of the United Nations, build consensus on the practice of multilateralism, and give new impetus to the strengthening of global governance. China's proposal received positive response from all parties, and more than 100 countries registered for the conference, Wang told reporters. The Chinese side put forward four proposals to rejuvenate multilateralism and build a just and rational global governance system, Wang said, adding that participants, after discussing China's proposals, reached a four-point consensus: Wang stressed that the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping are China's answer to key global issues of our time and contribute Chinese wisdom to the reform and improvement of global governance. No matter how the international situation changes, China will continue to practice multilateralism, uphold the ideals of the United Nations, and firmly safeguard the authority of the United Nations, he said, adding that China is ready to work with other countries to build an even better future. After 80 years, the UN is still the most representative and authoritative intergovernmental international organization and the core mechanism for achieving world peace and development. In the current situation, its role should be strengthened, not weakened, and its position must be maintained and cannot be replaced."; 5. Reporters; 6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Yi, Chinese foreign minister: "Second, the trend of multilateralism is irreversible. Unilateralism and protectionism find little support. All countries should support the multilateral system with the United Nations at its core, abide by the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes of the UN Charter, promote the concept of multilateralism and revitalize the spirit of multilateralism."; 7. Countries are interdependent and have a shared future, and no one can thrive in isolation. Strong countries should not bully the weak, and a return to 'the law of the jungle' approach must be avoided. Unity is better than division, and cooperation is better than confrontation. Only in this way can all countries win and the world achieve peace and development."; 9. Reporters; 10. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Yi, Chinese foreign minister (ending with shot 11): "Fourth, reforming and improving global governance cannot be delayed. Building a just and rational global governance system is the common aspiration of the international community and an effective way to address global challenges. Countries need to enhance the representation of the Global South and ensure that the will and interests of the majority of countries are reflected in the reform process."; 11. Cameras; 12.
