Diver in agony as lobster clamps down on his hand with spiked claws during underwater catch
My name is Ethan Yeo and I was out freediving in South Australia for Southern Rock Lobster also commonly known as Crayfish here in Australia. They often live in ledges and caves and this lobster was sitting at the back of the cave. I couldn't reach him so had to use what we call a 'horn snare' which is designed to go over the antenna and horn of the lobster so you can pull it out. I took my last breath and dived into the cave, I managed to get the loop of the snare over the lobster and the lobster to no surprise starting kicking to escape. I knew if I didn't get my hands on it, the lobster would twist and break off it's horn and escape. In the moment I was fumbling around and managed to get a hold of the lobster however my grip wasn't the best and it's front powerful claws got a hold of my hand. These Southern Rock Lobster's are built different to the other rock lobster species and do indeed have 2 big claws. They aren't like your typically Maine lobster claws as these also have have spikes inside the claws making them quite dangerous. One of it's spikes was actually digging deep into the top of my hand and must've been on one of my nerves as my hand was tingling, meanwhile my fingers were getting bitten by it's mouth. I wasn't going to let go though and made my way to the surface where my buddy was able to help pry it's claws open enough for me to pull my hand out. No doubt is this the most painful thing that has happened to me while lobster diving and I work as a commercial lobster diver and have caught tens of thousands of them.
