Thousands of Hindus paraded through the streets to celebrate the Mahashivratri festival.

The event is one of the most important holidays for Hindus and was observed in many towns across the country on February 26, with devotees worshipping Lord Shiva.

Worshippers observe fasting, visit temples, and perform rituals, staying awake throughout the night while chanting hymns.

Devotees believe that by observing a strict fast, they cleanse their body, mind, and soul, receiving the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Footage shows Naga Sadhus leading a grand procession at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi during the sacred occasion.

Naga Sadhus are typically seen wearing minimal clothing, often just a loincloth. Their lack of clothing symbolises the renunciation of material attachments and the ego, reflecting a life centred on spiritual devotion.

The festival also commemorates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the reincarnation of Sati. Goddess Parvati is the consort of Lord Shiva and the mother of their children, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya. She embodies love, fertility, and devotion.
