Many Palestinians in Gaza are sheltering in makeshift tents atop the rubble of their homes, struggling to rebuild their lives with nowhere else to go. A report by the United Nations says the Israeli army's bombing of residential neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip have caused an unprecedented amount of destruction in modern history. According to the UN, the conflict has left an unprecedented amount of rubble due to the destruction of buildings and infrastructure, amounting to 51 million tons. Hamas claims that Israel has dropped about 100,000 tons of explosives on Gaza since its offensive began in October 2023, destroying nearly 90 percent of the enclave's infrastructure. Um Nidal, an elderly Palestinian woman, is among the survivors of the airstrikes by Israel, which is currently under investigation by the International Court of Justice on charges of genocide. After the Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect, she returned to her neighborhood that has been reduced to rubble, setting up plastic tents with her children and grandchildren on the ruins of their home. Um Nidal said their living conditions among the ruins are extremely harsh compared to what they were before the Israeli airstrikes. With Gaza's infrastructure in ruins and access to water, electricity, and cooking supplies cut off, Palestinians have been forced to adopt primitive survival methods -- lighting fires to cook food and carrying water manually, while winter winds threaten to blow away their tents. Despite the devastation, Um Nidal said they choose to remain in Gaza, as they have nowhere else to go and no other place to call home. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Recent: 1. Various of ruins, destroyed buildings, tents, displaced Palestinians; 2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Nidal, displaced Palestinian (starting with shot 1): "The shells were falling on us from everywhere, the planes were bombing us. We fled to the schools to take shelter, and then we fled to Al-Shifa Hospital, later we fled to our relatives' house. 20 people from my family were killed in this house, their blood spread everywhere on walls. After they (Israelis) prevented even ambulances from reaching them, we were crying out loud asking them to allow us to bury them. We were afraid their bodies would be eaten by street dogs."; 3. Various of tents, displaced Palestinians; 4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Nidal, displaced Palestinian (starting with shot 3/ending with shot 5): "When the ceasefire started, we returned here. We found nothing but destruction. We could not find a home or a shelter. My son was injured and lost his foot. He suffered psychological shock to the point that he is afraid to go outside to gather water. His children try to carry the water but they cannot, they're just kids."; 5. Various of children trying to pick up bucket filled with water; 6. Various of Um Nidal, reporter walking amid ruins; 7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Nidal, displaced Palestinian (starting with shot 3/ending with shot 6): "We used to live in a seven-story building, each of my children had a floor of his own, and suddenly we found ourselves without a home or tents to accommodate our large family of seven. Now we are all crammed into just two tents, with more than ten people sleeping in each tent. This is inhuman!"; 8. Various of Um Nidal cooking; 9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Nidal, displaced Palestinian (ending with shot 10): "We live here in this tent on the rubble of our destroyed home. We will not leave or sell our home.
