Senegal: Female Guinea Baboons Are "Golddiggers" for Skilled Males
Senegal - March 05, 2025 Female Guinea baboons are proper golddiggers, a cracking study reveals. The German Primate Center - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research, led by brainbox William O'Hearn, watched two wild groups in Senegal and one at Nuremberg Zoo. They found these ladies go gaga for males with top-notch foraging tricks. One male per group was trained to pop open a special food box, making them the only ones dishing out treats. Suddenly, the females turned into golddiggers—hanging around these skilled lads, grooming them like crazy, and snapping at other gals. But when the box vanished, so did the fuss. Clearly, they weren’t swooning over talent—they just wanted the grub. The other males stayed cool as cucumbers. Despite scoffing the extra food, they didn’t bother cozying up to the box-opening stars. It seems blokes don’t fuss over food rivalry like the females do. William O'Hearn reckons it’s all about instant gains. “They’re not eyeing long-term skills—they want the payoff now,” he told The Royal Society. Tests kicked off at Nuremberg Zoo, where curator Lorenzo von Fersen says it’s a hoot for the baboons. “They love the brain teasers, and we get smashing data,” he beamed. Deputy director Jörg Beckmann added: “Zoos are research gems—loads of info you’d miss in the wild.” So, these golddigging baboons prove one thing: it’s all about what’s on offer today, not tomorrow!
