Terrified passengers fled from an American Airlines plane that caught fire at the Denver International Airport in Colorado on Thursday evening.

Footage shows the thick clouds of smoke engulfing the tarmac as the fliers scrambled to safety from flight 1006 at around 6pm local time.

No injuries were reported from the fire that erupted on the Boeing 737 passenger plane that was parked at Gate C38 of the Colorado airport, officials told local media.

The airport said: ‘Passengers were evacuated and the slides were deployed.

'The 172 customers and six crew members deplaned and are being relocated to the terminal.

'We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.'
