"Disappointing result. Disappointing performance," was Arne Slot's blunt assessment after Liverpool's EFL Cup defence ended with a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United in Sunday's final at Wembley Stadium.
The match came five days after Liverpool lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Champions League, and Slot conceded that the round of 16 exit may have played a part in Sunday's underwhelming effort: "If you look at the result and the performance, you might feel that it maybe did something to us."
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored either side of half-time for Newcastle, who held on to win and ended a near 56-year wait for a trophy after Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back in added time.
Despite two high profile defeats in a week, Slot could still take solace from Liverpool's position in the Premier League, where 'The Reds' currently hold a 12-point lead over nearest rivals Arsenal.
