Video shows fire that shut down Heathrow Airport
These dramatic videos show a terrifying blaze with smoke billowing into the sky on a residential street due to an electrical fire at Heathrow.
The clips, filmed by local resident Rebecca, capture the inferno towering above North Hyde Road in Hayes, London, at 11:35 pm on 20 March.
Thick black smoke rose above rooftops as flames lit up the night sky while bystanders watched. Rebecca said she was in her garden when she heard an explosion at 11 pm and saw the sky light up.
She said: "I rang my other half, who was inside, and asked, 'Did you hear that bang?' He looked outside and saw all our neighbours coming out to see what was going on. It was a massive fire, and the bang was like a huge explosion. The sky lit up."
Rebecca and her partner walked to nearby North Hyde Road, just a stone's throw from the burning substation.
She added: "We stood there and could feel the heat on our faces because the fire was so big. There were so many people, fire engines, police, and ambulances—it was very scary. We heard they were evacuating people nearby, but thankfully, we are safe. I just hope no one is injured."
Heathrow Airport, the UK's busiest, was forced to close on Friday, 21 March, after the electrical substation exploded in the west London suburb of Hayes.
