A 33-year-old man is being quizzed by cops on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found inside a flat.

Police were called to a property in Bolton, Gtr Manchester, shortly after 10am yesterday (Mon) following reports of "a concern for welfare"."

Officers found a woman "unresponsive" inside the flat at Kempston Gardens and, despite attempts at CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene."

The man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody as detectives probe the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

A murder investigation was immediately launched, with officers sealing off the flats and forensic specialists combing the scene for evidence.

Neighbours described a heavy police presence throughout the day, with officers guarding the entrance to the block and Crime Scene Investigation vans parked nearby.

Resident Terence Gormley said: "I did find it shocking. It was never like this when I moved here 40 years ago."

"The council wanted me to move into a flat round here but I'd rather stay in my house."

Another local, who asked not to be named, said: "A lot of people congregate round here, buying drugs, selling drugs."

"The kids can't use the park because of the people in there at night - you'd have to clean the equipment in the morning."

"But it's a shame for the poor woman and her family, to lose someone for absolutely no reason."

Detective Inspector Louise Kelly of the Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team said: "Our priority at this time is identifying the female and informing her family as soon as we are able to."

"Specialist officers will be available to support them throughout this investigation."

"A murder investigation has been launched and whilst we currently have a man in custody, there is a police cordon in place, and we are conducting enquires to establish the circumstances which have led to this tragic incident."

"We understand that an incident of this nature may cause concern within the community however we believe there is no wider risk to the public."

Those with information have been urged to call 101, quoting log 863 of 19/01/26, or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
