Russian officials detonated ice to prevent flooding as the spring thaw began.

The team carried out several controlled explosions on the ice covering the Sim River, targeting 250 square metres of frozen water to prevent flooding.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MCHS) deployed a task force to the area, working to pump water out of flooded garden houses and surrounding land.

Dramatic footage shows the managed blast, with waters erupting in the river on March 21.

The MCHS said that the team is continuing to assist residents and monitor the situation.
