Israel launched a fresh wave of airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon on Saturday, killing at least seven people and injured 40 others, according to Lebanon's Public Health Emergency Operations Center. Video footage captured Sunday by China Global Television Network (CGTN) shows that the airstrikes damaged vehicles and buildings, leaving rubble and debris scattered at the targeted areas. Israel said that they launched strikes against dozens of "Hezbollah targets" in Lebanon in response to the rockets fired into northern Israel on Saturday morning. Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military said it intercepted rockets launched from Lebanon toward the northern Israeli town of Metula. No casualties were reported, according to the country's emergency services. The exchange occurred amid lingering friction over a U.S.- and French-mediated ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which took effect on Nov. 27, 2023, halting over a year of hostilities. The truce stipulated an Israeli withdrawal from disputed Lebanese territory, but Israeli forces continue to occupy five border posts well past a Feb. 18 deadline, Lebanese officials say. Lebanon accused on Sunday Israel of escalating attacks under various pretexts, with the army condemning the continued deployment of Israeli troops within Lebanon as a "blatant violation of UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement."
