EID PRAYERS BEING HELDYOFF, SENEGAL - MARCH 31: Thousands of Senegalese Muslims wearing pure white clothes performed Eid al-Fitr prayer on the beach on Monday, March 31. Due to the different interpretations of the lunar calendar, Muslims in Senegal celebrated the first day of Eid al-Fitr today. In the Yoff region of the capital Dakar, followers of the Layene Brotherhood, a religious sect of Sufi Muslims, gathered on the beach around the tomb of the sect's founder, Seydina Mouhammadou Limamou Laye. The congregation of women, men and children dressed in all white, standing in a row on the beach by the ocean, performed the Eid prayer. Followers of the Layene sect, a religious sect based on Sufism and indigenous to Senegal, wear all white during Eid prayer and on important days because they believe it eliminates class differences. Eid al-Fitr is the holiday celebrated at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
