Germany: Protest held against Trump, Musk outside US embassy in Berlin
-BERLIN, GERMANY - APR. 5, 2025: On Saturday, April 5, US citizens gathered in front of the US Embassy in Berlin to protest against US President Donald Trump and businessman Elon Musk. Demonstrators carried US flags and banners reading "Trump is a fascist," "Hands off democracy, USAID, migrants," "Protect the people, not the rich," "Hands off free speech," "US SOS," and "Fight for democracy, defend democracy". Demonstrator Caery Nathesen said, "The cornerstones of democracy are being dismantled. Centuries of tradition are being insulted. Processes are being set in motion that could lead to the end of democracy. It is necessary to take action against this". Linea, who did not want to give her last name, was holding a banner demanding the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a graduate student at Tufts University in Massachusetts who has been imprisoned for supporting Palestinian demonstrations. Noting that she is a U.S. citizen and a former Tufts student, Linea said, "The chancellor of Tufts University sent an email to the entire community on Thursday saying that (Ozturk's) kidnapping by U.S. Immigration is completely unjust. This is an injustice." Linea demanded that Rumeysa Ozturk be released and allowed to complete her doctoral studies. Protester Therese said, "There are major attacks on democracy in the USA. This is urgent. They're attacking the weak, they're attacking everybody. We are here to stand up to that." Hundreds of people protested against businessman Elon Musk in front of the Tesla Service Center in Berlin with the slogan "Turn off Tesla's tap". Caro Weber, one of the organizers of the demonstration, demanded that Elon Musk stop undermining democratic structures. According to German media, police arrested a protester carrying a photo of Elon Musk making a gesture similar to the Hitler salute, and police are investigating whether the banner constitutes a criminal offense.
