Paris, France – April 7, 2025 – A massive fire broke out at the Syctom waste sorting center in Paris’ 17th arrondissement, completely destroying the facility. The blaze erupted near the Palais de Justice and Parc des Batignolles, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and raising concerns over potential toxicity in the area.

Authorities said the site mainly processed paper waste. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and the Prefect of Police reported that no toxic substances had been detected in the air during initial checks.

The incident occurred in a busy zone between Porte d’Asnières and Porte de Clichy, serviced by metro lines 13 and 14. The modern judicial complex, Palais de Justice—designed by Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 2018—sits nearby but was not affected by the fire.
