Storyline: China's icebreaker Xuelong returned to Shanghai on Tuesday morning after successfully completing the main objectives of the nation's 41st Antarctic expedition. At 09:00, the polar research icebreaker Xuelong docked at a base terminal in Shanghai. The expedition team, comprising 516 members from 118 domestic and international institutions, was divided into three separate voyage segments using three vessels - Xuelong, Xuelong 2 and Yong Sheng. Yong Sheng returned after completing its mission on Jan. 23, 2025, while Xuelong 2 remains in the Ross Sea on a joint voyage and is expected back to Shanghai in June. This year's mission achieved several significant milestones across technological innovation, large-scale application of independently developed polar equipment, and enhanced international cooperation. The expedition has broken records in both operational duration and coverage area. Notably, the team carried out China's first-ever wintering operation at the Qinling Station, ushering in a new era of overwintering in three stations for Chinese Antarctic research. For the first time, a multi-source clean energy system, which integrates wind, solar, hydrogen, and storage, was used in Antarctica. Aerial surveys filled critical data gaps in previously uncharted ice sheet regions, while researchers also collected deep-sea sediment samples, including long gravity cores from the Amundsen Sea, for the first time. These accomplishments provide valuable support for China and the international community in advancing Antarctic research, fighting global climate change, and contributing to the governance of the polar region.
