Kentucky flood rescue efforts increased as heavy rain lashed the region.

Dramatic footage shows widespread inundation in High Bridge, submerging houses and trees on April 6.

Authorities said water continued to rise, nearing record levels, causing concern for residents in the area.

The Kentucky National Guard deployed 350 soldiers and airmen to conduct rescue operations and reach stranded individuals.

Officials confirmed the death toll from severe flooding across Kentucky was now believed to be five.

Governor Andy Beshear said: 'Four days of severe storms have brought devastation to communities across the Commonwealth. I want to thank all of our first responders and volunteers, both locally and from out of state, who have dedicated time to help our people.

'While the threat of severe storms has ended, several rivers and creeks remain at or above flood stage, and roadways remain underwater in several areas. So we need folks to remain cautious.'

The freak weather began on Wednesday, dumping heavy rainfall across the state for several days, swelling rivers and inundating highways.
