A basket filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, featuring the number “68” made from fruit, was placed in her enclosure as a birthday surprise. Fatou, a female gorilla who has become a favorite among Berlin residents over the decades, approached the basket and enjoyed the healthy treats in front of members of the media and visitors. Zoo visitors and staff expressed joy at witnessing Fatou’s milestone, praising her longevity and continued vitality. According to zoo officials, Fatou remains active and in good health, making her not only the oldest animal at Berlin Zoo but also one of the oldest gorillas living in captivity worldwide. Writing by Sibel Uygun Fatou was brought to Berlin in 1959 and has since become one of the most iconic animals at the facility. Zoo management emphasized the importance of ongoing care and enrichment activities in ensuring her well-being over the years.
