Gaza Strip: Displaced women in Gaza keep Eid spirit alive with 'kaak'
KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MARCH 28, 2025: Despite renewed Israeli attacks and a tightened blockade following the collapse of the ceasefire agreement, Palestinian women in Gaza are working to bring Eid joy to children by preparing traditional Eid cookies. In the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, displaced Palestinian women at Al-Hurani school have started making "kaak," traditional Eid cookies that are an integral part of Palestinian culture. Working with limited resources, they are determined to keep the festive spirit alive. Gathering in a classroom of the school, which was previously bombed by Israeli forces, the women work together to prepare trays of cookies. In another classroom, the cookies are baked in clay ovens made from the earth, showcasing resilience amid difficult circumstances. Children also participate in the preparations, helping their mothers carry trays of cookies, contributing to the Eid celebrations despite the ongoing hardships in Gaza. The Israeli army launched a surprise aerial campaign on the Gaza Strip on March 18, shattering the January ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement. More than 50,200 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 113,900 injured in Israeli genocide on Gaza since October 2023. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Nur Zeynep Dukmen
