The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 51,000 Palestinian deaths, with many victims still buried under rubble or in temporary graves across hospitals, parks, and other open areas. In a recent report, Doctors Without Borders described the situation in Gaza as resembling a mass grave for both Palestinians and aid workers. Israel's blockade has severely hampered identification efforts, leaving families without answers and hospitals struggling to cope. At Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza—now operating at limited capacity after being damaged in Israeli raids—morgues are filled with decomposing bodies that cannot be properly identified. Dr. Imad Shehadeh, a forensic expert at Al-Shifa Hospital, explained to Anadolu that medical staff must rely on basic techniques like bone measurements, dental examinations, and reviewing personal effects due to the lack of proper equipment. The scale of the problem is immense, with thousands of bodies awaiting identification. According to Dr. Shehadeh, Israel's restrictions have blocked the entry of DNA testing devices and necessary supplies, while Gaza also faces a shortage of trained forensic personnel. So far, only 10 out of 450 bodies at the hospital have been identified. Some remains have been in storage for months, with only bones remaining as soft tissue decomposes. Dr. Shehadeh noted that while medical teams can sometimes determine approximate age or gender, such methods fall short of providing definitive identifications. Many families continue waiting for confirmation about missing relatives, unable to properly bury their loved ones. He urged international organizations to help pressure Israel to allow forensic equipment into Gaza and to support the territory's overwhelmed healthcare system.
