MARI FREYHAT, MEMBER OF THE OLIVE CHURCH STAFF SPEAKING TO REPORTERDAMASCUS, SYRIA - APRIL 20, 2025: Easter, one of the most significant holidays in Christianity, was marked across Syria on Sunday with religious ceremonies and traditional family celebrations. Masses were held in churches in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, and Latakia to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. In the capital, the main ceremonies took place in the predominantly Christian neighborhoods of Bab Touma and Bab Sharqi. At the Church of the Olive in Damascus, Mari Freyhat explained how local Christians observe the occasion. “We have a special lunch at home for this day. We enjoy traditional desserts we’ve prepared, and we give children painted eggs and gifts to make them happy,” she said. Expressing hope for peace in the country, Freyhat said, “Our people are exhausted. As a nation, we deserve to rest, to be well, and to live in safety.”
