Footage shows locals running into the street as an earthquake struck Istanbul in Turkey today.

The magnitude 6.2 quake was centered in the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul. It shook the surrounding regions but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries but residents fled from buildings.

Turkey's AFAD disaster agency said the quakes was one of the strongest to strike the city of 16 million in recent years.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 12:49 (0949 GMT) was in the area of Silivri, some 80 km (50 miles) to the west of Istanbul. It was at a depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles), AFAD said.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck southeast of Marmara Ereglisi at 9:49 UTC. It was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres.
