US: Rescue Teams Save Two Stranded Rappellers From Desert Mine Shaft
United States - April 19, 2025 This past weekend, San Bernardino County Fire crews conducted a complex mine shaft rescue southeast of 29 Palms. Two individuals became stranded about 250 feet down an abandoned mine shaft after their rappelling gear failed. A third person, who remained above ground, called 911. Firefighters from 29 Palms and Yucca Valley arrived first and requested additional help. Specialized rescue teams from Fontana, Lake Arrowhead, and Hesperia joined as part of California Regional Task Force 6. Crews used all-terrain vehicles to reach the remote location and transport equipment. After making contact with the trapped individuals and lowering them water, a rescuer was lowered safely using a dual-line rope system. Both victims were secured and lifted to the surface without injuries. The rescue was completed shortly after 7 p.m. Support came from the Marine Corps Air Combat Center, Morongo Basin Ambulance, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. This operation highlighted the fire department’s capability to respond to emergencies in difficult and remote areas.
