At 12:25 p.m. on April 29, a sudden fire broke out at Sanli Chuniang Restaurant in the Baita District of Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province. As of 2:00 p.m., the incident had resulted in 22 deaths and 3 injuries.

Eyewitnesses stated that the fire occurred at a small two-story roadside restaurant, covering an area of about 300 square metres.

On-site footage showed flames shooting out from the second-floor windows, with both floors engulfed. External windows on the second floor may have been blocked by metal grilles or advertising boards, which hindered timely evacuation. Thick smoke spread rapidly, and initial reports suggest most casualties were likely due to smoke inhalation.

President Xi Jinping issued important instructions regarding the fire, emphasising the need to make every effort to treat the injured, properly handle the aftermath for the deceased, and resolutely prevent and curb major safety accidents.

Premier Li Qiang called for full-scale rescue and treatment operations, a swift investigation into the cause, and strict accountability.

As of 4:00 p.m. on April 29, rescue operations and post-incident arrangements were still ongoing.
