Trailer truck crashes into low bridge causing traffic jam
A trailer truck crashed into a low bridge, causing traffic chaos in Bangkok.
The trailer was carrying a container that struck the side of a motorway on April 25.
Dashcam footage shows the container snagging on a bridge pier with a loud crash. It fell onto the road and sparked a traffic jam at the junction.
Traffic police said they received a report at 9:15 pm.
Police Lieutenant Pairoj Jumpol of Lat Phrao Police Station said: ‘The truck collided with the beam of the bridge, causing half of the container to fall down and the other half to remain stuck on the trailer, causing a traffic jam.
‘I found the truck driver, Praiwan, 52, and seized his driving licence.
‘I asked him what company the truck belonged to, and he told me that it belonged to him after purchasing it from a company.'
However, he claimed Praiwan fled the scene while officers were trying to restore traffic.
A crane was dispatched to remove the fallen container obstructing traffic. The trailer was impounded by police as they searched for the missing Praiwan.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
