Power outage plunges tourist island Bali into darkness
A power outage plunged the tourist island of Bali into darkness, leaving residents and visitors without electricity for hours.
The blackout occurred around 4 pm on May 2, after an undersea cable was reportedly severed, causing a widespread power failure across the island.
Dramatic footage shows streets blacked out during the outage, with traffic lights down and buildings cloaked in an eerie gloom as the Friday evening rush hour descended into chaos.
A spokesman for state-run utility firm PLN said: 'We would like to apologise for the inconvenience. We are currently focusing on restoring the system before normalising the load.'
Power was fully restored by Saturday morning.
Bali is Indonesia's top tourist destination, drawing 6.3 million foreign visitors in 2024.
The outage came just days after Spain and Portugal experienced similar massive blackouts that left large parts of both countries without power. Officials said the electricity cut was part of a major grid failure.
Spain declared a state of emergency, deploying more than 30,000 police officers to manage the disruption caused by the power failure.
